With a background in architecture, Derek Mizner has found a path designing simple furniture that is molded to meet the needs of urban environments and lifestyles. Through creative ideas, sketches, and everyday mechanical intuition, new products are devised, drawn, and ultimately fabricated by hand. Since the beginning, the concept "truth to materials" has been a principle in the construction of the final products. Using varying sizes of rebar and red oak, pieces took shape and complimented each material. The rusted feel of the rebar and the smooth natural grain of red oak strengthened the forms of the individual pieces. Later, experiments in powder coating colors reacted with vibrancy and emotion. Newer ideas have continued with minimalistic archetypes, such as stainless steel and acrylic. Most materials are "repurposed"; rebar used for reinforced concrete and plow shear discs used in agricultural work. Producing interesting, beautiful pieces of furniture continues to take on a role of working with the client's own settings and likes. A goal to fabricate affordable, attractive, quality pieces is always the highest priority, all while striving to intergrate repurposed or recycled materials into the designs. Adapting and amalgamating furniture and hardware into architecture is a future vision once steps can be made to make the leap into design-build projects. The future looks bright. Derek Mizner, originally from Austin, Texas has a degree in Environmental Design from Texas A&M University. After graduating cum laude, Derek returned to Austin to begin his career in architecture. A two-year stint with the Peace Corps in Central America gave him the perspective of the struggles and basic necessities for survival in third-world life. Derek relocated to New York City to attend Columbia University and received a Master's Degree in Architecture and Urban Design, later working in the field of architecture in the city. Two years later, Derek was once again called back to Austin to team up with Lars Stanley (FAIA) allowing him to concentrate on architectural metalworking and further pursue his passion for furniture and speciality design.
